Junior Engineer positions are available in the areas of Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Transportation and Sanitary. Under supervision, positions in this class perform beginning-level engineering work in diverse operating departments including Public Works, Public Utilities, Airport, Port, Municipal Railway and Parking and Traffic.

The City offers an engineering progression series that supports rapid promotional opportunities through the professional Engineering levels. Junior Engineers hired at the entry-level step will receive a 5% step increase in pay after six months of service. After one year of satisfactory service and attainment of the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate, a Junior Engineer may be promoted to an Assistant Engineer. There are subsequent opportunities for promotion to mid-level and upper-level engineering management positions as the City maintains six levels of professional engineering classes.

Junior Engineer positions are available in the areas of Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Transportation and Sanitary. Under supervision, positions in this class perform beginning-level engineering work in diverse operating departments. The essential functions of this class include: applying engineering principles and practices to civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, and transportation engineering projects; preparing routine studies, designs, drawings, sketches, and plans using AutoCAD and other software tools; conducting field inspections of existing structures, construction sites and projects; preparing reports, contract specifications, lists of materials, cost estimates, schedules, and progress payments; gathering, preparing, and maintaining engineering data, records, and reports. Junior Engineers may direct the activities of technical engineering staff. Performs related duties as required.

Candidates must meet one of the following qualifications:

  1. Graduation from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) with an engineering baccalaureate degree with a major in civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, or transportation or a related baccalaureate engineering degree (must submit copies of diploma or transcripts); OR

  2. Possession of a valid Engineering-in-Training Certificate (National Council of Engineering Educators) AND one year of verifiable engineering work at a level equivalent to the City's 5201 Junior Engineer (must submit copy of a valid Engineer-in-Training Certificate and verification of qualifying work experience. Verification of work experience must be on the employer’s letterhead, and must include the applicant’s name, job title, description of job duties, dates of service, and signature of the employer. City and County employees who qualify under #2 do not need to submit verification of their City employment, but must submit verification of outside experience if their City experience does not equal one full year); OR

  3. An engineering baccalaureate degree from a non-ABET accredited engineering program with a major in civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, chemical, or transportation engineering, or a related baccalaureate engineering degree AND possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training Certificate (National Council of Engineering Educators) (must submit copies of diploma or transcripts and a copy of a valid Engineer-in-Training Certificate); OR

  4. Proof of current enrollment in the final year of an engineering program. Applicants must meet the requirements established in the Graduating Engineering Student Program (GESP) (must submit copies of current official transcripts, and if required, a copy of a valid Engineer-in-Training Certificate).

Candidates may substitute the following qualifications:

  1. Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California (PE license) can be substituted for possession of an EIT certificate.

  2. A Master's degree in Engineering (with a major in civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental, chemical, or transportation engineering, or a closely related field) from a college or university with an ABET accredited program can be substituted for the requirement in Minimum Qualification #1.
